Marlis E. Gieser

November 14, 1929 – July 9, 2018

 

Our beloved Gigi passed away on July 9th after a lengthy stay at Arleigh Burke Pavilion in McLean, she was 89 years old at the time of her death. She is survived by her daughters, Gloria Karel of Bethesda, MD and Jennifer Laird of Boise, ID; granddaughter Emily Karel of Washington D.C, grandson Greg Karel of Arlington, VA, grandaughter Hailey Laird of Phillipsburg, MT and grandson Garrett Laird of Portland, OR.

Marlis was born in Hamm, Germany to August and Dorothea Huke. Marlis met US army soldier, Lt. Albert F Gieser where they married in Eschwege, Germany in 1947.  Marlis loved the United States and always took pride in her citizenship. As the wife of an army officer, she traveled extensively throughout the world and delighted in absorbing the cultures with her husband and two daughters. She loved people and easily engaged them with her warmth and charm. She was a devoted mother, but also worked part time as a bilingual bookkeeper. She cherished kaffee klatches with lifelong friends and her passion for music and dance were conveyed through her participation ballroom dancing and choral singing.

she will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery on September 4th, 2018 at 10:00am where she will be laid to rest by our father, Major Albert F. Gieser, who passed away on October 8th, 2008. A reception will be held after the graveside service at the home of Gloria.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in her name to the Marlis E Gieser Memorial Fund which will be established in the near future on behalf of the loving caregivers (Certified Nursing Assistants) at Vinson Hall in McLean, VA.
