Juanita Emilia Fernandez

Juanita Emilia Fernandez  passed away suddenly on March  29, 2018 at the age of 95 .  She was born in Cuba and immigrated to the United States shortly before  World War II in 1941.   A  long time Washington area resident she lived in DC, Alexandria, Arlington and most recently Silver Spring Md.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents Antonio and Aurora Perez , her husband  Antonio ( Tony) Fernandez  , and  her sister  Emilia Perez . She is survived by her sisters Aurora Vasquez, Aleida  R Baum , Maria Galvan, Lucia Vasallo brother Pedro Perez ,daughter Cecilia Fernandez DeRosa , granddaughters Katrina and Rachel DeRosa  , her son Gabriel Fernandez , granddaughter Cristina Fernandez Monin, grandson Sean Fernandez , great granddaughter Emma Monin , great grandson Benjamin Antonio Monin  and many loving nieces and nephews .
 
She will be remembered as a wonderful mother who was a avid reader, who loved cooking,  making clothes, and quilting . She enjoyed funny stories and tried to help anyone who was in need.
 
She was a proud hardworking member of the greatest generation. They don’t make them like her anymore.  Although she loved the Cuba of her youth, she grew to love America more , proudly becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen . Her strong faith in God , indomitable spirit, and sheer will power carried her though many difficult years as a widow raising two young children.
 
After a private viewing by family , interment will take place at Columbia Gardens Cemetery April 5 . 2018 at 11:30 am  
 
In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital .
