Robert Rhys Thompson

Robert Rhys Thompson, known by friends and family as Rhys, passed away on January 12, 2018 in Arlington, VA at the age of 20. Born in London, England, he lived most of his life in Richardson, TX. Rhys was loved by many people – especially his mother Michelle, his father Bob, and his sister Travis. From a very young age, Rhys was known for his outgoing personality and stubborn individualism. Rhys pursued a long list of unique, special interests – including Kung Fu/martial arts, piano, baseball, video games, Magic the Gathering, and Asian pop culture. He picked up skills and mastered them with uncanny ease. He was never one for the conventional. He threw a nasty slider from a weird windup, was the best once-a-year ping pong player ever, and routinely expounded on a variety of obscure subjects. He devoured Japanese anime, and loved to explain the arcane details of trading card games to his beloved grandmothers, Grammy and Nana. Everyone who crossed his path loved him. Everyone will miss him. For years Rhys fought mental health and addiction issues, but the pain that he faced is over. The spirit he possessed lives on, carried forever by those lucky folks who spent time with him.

Dear sweet Rhys, such a terrible loss. Michelle and Bob, my heart aches for you. I have so many precious memories of Rhys especially from Aldridge. I can still see him and Lauren playing Pokemon. He always had the best manners when he was over. He even gave Robby his old skate board. I cannot imagine your pain and have no words to express the sadness I feel. I pray for your family to God to take this burden from you.
    With love and sympathy,

My heartfelt condolences to Michelle, Bob, Travis and Gail! It was so sad to hear of his passing and my heart hurts for you. It looks like you have many great memories of him to help you through this time. I only met him the day of Goody’s funeral and he was such a sweet boy, talking about his Grandpa. Gail had some fun stories from when he stayed with her so I always felt like I knew him. May all the thoughts and prayers give you some comfort.

Rhys was best friend when we went to high school. If it wasn’t for his friendly and outgoing nature I would never have left my house. I looked up to Rhys, he wasn’t perfect, but he lived everyday to its fullest. I try everyday to live my life with the same zeal and passion that Rhys did. I loved Rhys as a brother, and will miss him dearly.

  18. Suzanne, Jackson, and Scott Richardson says:

Michelle, Bob, Travis – We love Rhys. We are so grateful to have known him. His imprint resides here in our home and in our hearts.

There were many instances of spaghetti dinners, board games, piano playing, Pokeman, Yugioh, Star Wars Attacktix, Rubik’s Cube, street baseball, scooter riding … Laughter.

There were even philosophical conversations. Suz was always amazed at the ease with which Rhys shared his thoughts and could speak to highly conceptual ideas as an adolescent. He wasn’t afraid to think outside the lines.

Rhys was a wonderful friend and encourager for Jackson. After one particular bedroom “refresh” Jackson wasn’t very happy with the outcome. Rhys came over, took a look, and gave his stamp of approval. Jackson was all right with it then. It saved us a lot more painting. Thank you Rhys!

Rhys also blazed downhill on his scooter with regularity. Jackson said he was too afraid to go that fast. In time, however, Jackson said he built the courage to do it. Rhys set the template for attaining top scooter speed on Ridgebriar Dr.

I was impressed with Rhys’s ability to solve the Rubik’s Cube. He was always so curious. He picked up a cube in the house one day and showed up a few days later with it solved. Many who set out to solve it take weeks or months. Rhys took only a few short days and shortly thereafter his solves were measured in seconds.

Rhys made us happy when he was with us. Michelle, Bob, thank you so much for shaping Rhys and letting him be a part of our lives.

“To know that one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded.” Thank you for making us all breathe easier Rhys. We love you, and you will always be with us.

Michelle, Bob, Travis, all of our love, thoughts, and support are with you.

    … Suzanne, Jackson, and Scott

Rhys boy, Tommy Boy, Robert Rhys Thompson. I love and miss you an unfathomable amount. I miss seeing your tall and powerful presence through the window whenever you’d knock on my door to hand out. I miss walking to the creek exchanging conversation of all types, seeing one other as a friend and as an equal, existing with our guards down. I miss everything about you dude, I even miss getting mad at you when you’d ignore social queues. The theme of our friendship was one of trial and endurance, fights and apologies, loving and learning. Your wisdom will be remembered, your heart will be remembered, your laugh will be remembered, your passion will be remembered, you will be remembered. I can’t wait to join you, Stewart, and Kelsey in the afterlife. I love you so much Rhys, always have, always will.
