Loudene Smith Bass, aged 90, passed away peacefully at her Arlington home on January 11, 2018, surrounded by family. She is survived by her children Ronald Bass (Linda Allen) of Arlington, VA; Wanda Greinke of Greenville, SC; and Paul Bass of Chandler, Arizona; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and her sister Dorothy Waters. She was predeceased by her husband Col. Robert L. Bass, her son Joseph Alan Bass, her great-grandson Cameron Reece, her sister Irene Graves, and her brother Angus Smith.
Loudene was the heart and soul of her family. From her humble roots in rural Geneva County, Alabama, she lived in places as varied as Germany, Okinawa, Monterey, Kansas City KA, Omaha and Hampton Virginia as a willing partner in Army life. She and Robert retired to Tampa, Florida before relocating to Arlington.
Loudene was proud homemaker, a southern cook, a loving mother and grandmother, and a superb storyteller. Her side-splitting stories about life in mid-century rural Alabama spared no one. She was known to enjoy cooking up a squirrel and sitting for High Tea. Her fried cornbread was a masterpiece enjoyed by all.
Loudene had style. She dressed to the nines throughout her life, and loved shoes, jewelry and creating the perfect ensemble. She was a dear friend to many.
Surviving grandchildren include Allison Reece (Bryan) of Harrisburg, NC; Kathleen Jacoby (Steve) of Sterling VA; Deborah Ehlers (John) of Arlington, VA; Julia Cole (David) or Culpeper, VA; Jacob Greinke of Greenville, SC; Shannon Greinke of Greenville, SC; and Dane Greinke of Raleigh, NC. Surviving great-grandchildren include Zachary Reece, Ryan Reece, Avery Reece, Amy Jacoby, Maia Ehlers and Claire Jacoby.
We love you Mom. We love you Grams.
