Charles B. Shettler, (Chuck), Lt. Col., USAF (retired)

Charles Schettler, eldest son of Marian & Cyril Schettler (dec), died of cancer & complications of diabetes. Survived by wife of 47 years, Arlene, daughter Vivian (Lance), son Richard (Christina), grandchildren: Elizabeth, Zachary, Madeline, Matteo and Natalia. Siblings: Darrell, Emily, Bill, Bob, Mary, David and Cecilia. Preceded in death by brothers Milton, Mick and Ben.
Chuck received a BS in Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering from Catholic University. He joined the US Air Force in 1964, married Arlene in 1970, and then went to Vietnam. Later he worked in the missile program, Kansas; at SAC HQ, Omaha NE; the Defense Intelligence Agency, Rosslyn VA; Missile Defense, England; Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton OH. He earned an MBA in Finance & Management from University of Nebraska. In retirement he became a writer and editor. He was involved in Boy Scouts, Volksmarching, and writing a book.
Chuck had a great smile. When you saw the dimples start to show you could be sure an appropriate quip would follow. He was totally accepting of others: race, creed, origin, status didn’t matter. He was a seeker of knowledge and understanding. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
A Visitation at Advent Funeral Home, 7211 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, Friday, September 1 from 5:00-900 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am September 2 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 5300 N. 10th Street, Arlington Va.
Interment will take place on Monday, December 4, 2017 at 10:00 am at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors. Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet at Arlington National Cemetery administration building by 9:15 am.
In lieu of flowers send a donation to Arlington Capital Caring Hospice.
