LCDR Charles Hubble Swearingen, USN, Ret of Arlington, VA slipped peacefully into the Lord’s arms while surrounded by loved ones on May 24, 2012 at the age of 91. He touched the hearts of everyone he met and will be deeply missed. Our beloved ‘Papa-San’ was a devoted sports fan and had an immense love of family and life, remaining active in both his church and as a Realtor with Century 21 Gawen Realty.
‘Charlie’ was born a farmer in Science Hill, KY and was a graduate of Western Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky. Following service in the Pacific during WWII and the Korean War, he taught vocational agriculture before beginning a 26 year career with the US Agriculture Dept’s Packers and Stockyards Admin, retiring in 1982 as an Agricultural Economist. He is predeceased by his wife Mary Lee (Yancey) Swearingen and two brothers, Victor and Orville. Surviving him are his three daughters Bobbie Bosley, Mary Rayburn and Vickie Barber, 4 grandsons and 4 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Charlie’s life for friends and family will be held at the Westover Baptist Church in Arlington, VA at 11:00 AM on June 9, 2012, with interment at Arlington National Cemetery in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Westover Baptist Church.
